Areas of Responsibility Include:
  • Laboratory safety
  • Environmental sampling, testing, and reporting
  • Potable water sampling, testing and reporting
  • Waste water treatment
  • Wet laboratory analysis and technique
  • Fuel and oil sampling and analysis
  • Daily water quality monitoring
  • Ensuring equipment/instrumentation performance and reliability
  • Customer service and good communication are essential in this position.
  • Job activities will involve working with individuals from plant operations, maintenance and planning, engineering, environmental, analytical laboratory, and outside vendors.
 
Job Duties Include:
  • Collect and analyze surface waters for reporting to EGLE.
  • Comply with Environmental Regulations for drinking and surface water quality.
  • Sample, analyze and process waste for proper disposal.
  • Collect, calculate, and review data to prepare various reports (both internal and external).
  • Calibrate field and laboratory instrumentation.
  • Maintain and repair lab instrumentation, inline instrumentation, and equipment.
  • Monitor processes and system status and take action to address issues.
  • Adherence to a Quality Control and Assurance Program.
  • Submit electronic work requests (notifications) for identified deficiencies on plant equipment.
 
Skills:
  • Monitor, sample and ensure compliance with environmental regulations of the site's drinking and surface waters.
  • This requires working outside in all weather conditions.
  • Candidate will need to obtain waste treatment operator certifications and drinking water operator license.
  • Sample, analyze and process various waste streams for proper disposal.
  • Monitor and take corrective action in support of the site's make-up water production and boiler and feedwater chemistry specifications.
  • Maintain and troubleshoot inline analyzers, electronic, electrical, mechanical, and other equipment for plant systems.
  • Consults with supervisors, operators, and engineers to review assigned area needs, discuss problems, prioritize work, and provide technical expertise.
  • Regularly interact with outside agencies, vendors and manufacturers.
  • Support the 24 / 7 plant operations including weekend and holiday coverage.
  • Regular attendance is expected.
 
Hours and Travel
  • Meet travel requirements of the position.
  • Work a flexible schedule, which may include evenings, weekends, holidays and overtime.
  • Rotation of weekend and holiday duties and on call assignments.

  • Duties involve moving materials weighing up to 10 pounds on a regular basis such as pumps, valves, motors, gauges, other operating or lab equipment, books, paper, laptop computer, etc., and may require moving materials weighing up to 35 pounds.
 
Education:
  • Associate degree in a scientific or technical field, or 48 scientific or technical credit hours as measured on a semester basis.
 
The following skills may set you apart from others:
  • Bachelor of Science in Environmental Science, Chemistry and other fields of Science or Mathematics.
  • 1+ year of experience with NPDES, Storm Water, and RCRA waste management
  • Waste Treatment Plant Operator Certification(s)
  • 1+ year of experience performing maintenance, technical, and/or operational activities at a power plant or chemical processing plant.
  • Familiarity with the thermodynamic steam cycle, power plant system components as well as environmental monitoring and regulatory compliance.
  • Knowledge of analytical laboratory equipment and instrumentation, mechanical equipment (pumps, valves, etc.), and high quality water production (RO, ion exchange, filtration).
  • Experience with SAP and Microsoft Excel
